screw blog software

I’ve made the switch to WordPress. I’ll talk about it in the next couple of days. All I can say is it’s infinitely easier than MovableType. No more major stress over my website! I am losing a bunch of comments that live in my phpBB forum, and I’m not even about to try and figure out how to transfer them. Anyone up for it? There’s money involved!

I’m sure there’s some broken mess all over the place, and I am not sure whether or not I’ll keep this new layout, but I’ll slowly figure it all out. I had a layout in development that I might refer to and integrate into this, but it depends on how much time I want to commit amongst the billion other things I have going on

march 2008

Here’s a month in reflection:

  • NYC is best spent with someone. I can’t go there alone again without an objective, someone by my side, and keeping myself busy.
  • I meet the occasional person who I wasn’t expecting. Once again, that happened. The challenge is to keep it up in the meantime.
  • Next time I get the flu, 3 days max. And, please, not right in the middle of a conference at which I really wanted to spend more time networking and enjoying myself.
  • Austin is a small town trying to feel like a big city, but it’s really a small city that acts like a large town. Keep Austin weird!
  • SXSWi is getting too big for its own good. It makes me wonder what to do about next year.
  • I need to learn how to balance spending time out with friends and making time for myself. I hate sacrificing the chance to see people but I need to spend the time alone that I know I need.
  • Each visit to Houston reminds me of two things: I’m glad I’m living somewhere else but I miss it just as much as always. It’s always bittersweet to go back and return from the city.
  • I let go of a bunch of stuff I’ve had in boxes for years. I didn’t get any time to go through and sort that which I wanted to keep from that which I didn’t want. Nevertheless, it had to happen. Parts of my past went up in smoke, literally.
  • I didn’t have any Easter candy until after Easter when it was all on sale. What a nice way to save money!

by the time i blinked my eyes…

…it was all over.

What the heck? Where did SXSWi go? All of a sudden, it’s over. Out with the old and in with the new.

Can I get a do over? Please? I didn’t do nearly as much as I really wanted to, I didn’t make the connections I hope I had, and I was sick as a dog for most of it.

I guess there’s always next year.

being sick at sxswi

I do not recommend it. I think it’s a poor idea to get sick while attending a big conference. It hurts to talk, most people can’t understand or hear you and you kinda just fade in the background. Never again!

Come on, body, heal yourself!

the worst timing for being sick

This is not how I expected my month to go.

I spent a week in Manhattan enjoying it with my brother and dad. We saw lots of old and new places. The problem is that by the end of the week, I somehow contracted a virus. It wasn’t a minor virus either, it’s now full blown attacking me.

I’m now in Austin having arrived yesterday evening. My flight from LaGuardia was delayed three times and I had to rebook a flight from Houston to Austin. After 12 hours of airports and airplanes, I spent about another hour on the bus system before arriving at my destination broken and tired. So instead of either going out with the SXSWi crews or even with the person I’m staying, I forced myself into bed hoping that sleep and relaxation would cure this ailment.

Nope.

I need drugs. Badly!

I’ve already missed parties, I’m going to miss panels, and I might not even start participating until later today or tomorrow by the looks of it. Can I get a do over, please?

UPDATE 11:30am: Screw it, I’m at the conference. No more sacrifices for my health! ;-)

nyc in march

My flight was approximately 5 hours. I was awake for less than an hour of it. Perfect.

The best thing about being back in NYC? The excitement I feel about being in the hustle and bustle of such an amazing city.

The worst thing about being back in NYC? It’s March and it’s freezing cold. I didn’t bring a heavy jacket either.

goodbye RCA tv

For what seems like only a blip in time, I’ve owned my childhood TV (27″ RCA model # F27155AK) for about seven years now. I bought it from my dad in January 2001 right before I finally left for college again after two years of being home.

That trip was one of the more memorable occasions in my childhood almost twenty years ago this year. My dad made it a family trip since it was a very big occasion for us. Our very first large screen television with all the works!

We all looked around at a bunch of furniture and electronics while my dad was shopping for the best of the best, probably having already picked out the exact model he wanted from his research in Consumer Reports for the best TV of the day. Once we saw what we were getting, everyone was excited and ready to get back home and hook that TV right up. It could very well have been a scene out of the Simpsons.

This TV has travelled with me to Lubbock, Texas. I then brought it up to Denver, Colorado for my last two years of college. Once I completed college, it went right back down to Houston with me where it was mostly in a room sitting there or a garage sitting there. After a year of figuring out what to do with my life, it moved with me to Los Angeles, California. Then, since being here in LA, it moved three times in two houses and three rooms.

Now, after being in the same spot since about August of 2005, it’s finally decided to stop sending signal on the tube. After turning it on, it almost sounds like when a car that doesn’t catch the spark and keeps cycling until the spark starts it up. Except this sound is completely electronic, basically to the beat of AC current running to the sockets.

Now, I must decide what to do. I think craigslist might be a good option since people usually find value in old junk. I’ve already given away two monitors last year, one of which I had since 2000 and was such a good monitor. I bought a 24″ Dell LCD monitor to replace it and it was mostly worth it (except when I’m trying to design a website and need very accurate colors. LCDs are still not as good as CRTs). Sadly, I grow emotional attachments to my stuff. In the end after it’s gone, however, it’s just stuff and I don’t think about it.

Since I’m leaving in a week to go away for close to a month, I won’t have to even worry about it until I get back. My trip agenda includes Manhattan for a week, Austin for a week, then Houston for over a week. March is gonna be a time of renewal for me. 2008 has been a rough start for many reasons but I feel it’s mostly downhill for a while.

Goodbye blessed RCA TV. You’ve brought me many episodes of the best and worst of television and so many other shows throughout the years for the rest of the family. You’ll be missed.

meh

There’s so much going on that this feels like a chore.

My top priorities right now:

  1. Finish up design projects either initiated or started last year
  2. Refresh design at work before the end of the month
  3. Switch to cheaper auto insurance
  4. Read a couple of books
  5. Start doing anything musically
  6. Finish my taxes already
  7. Stay motivated and ready for NYC, SXSWi, and Houston for the whole month of March.
  8. Figure out what to do with my personal stuff I left behind in Texas
  9. Get back in touch with everyone I haven’t seen this year

To be continued…

footalk episode #1

It’s up! Download it.

Footalk

my first podcast: Footalk

Footalk.netI don’t know why it took me so many years to finally do something like this, but I finally decided and made time to start a podcast. It’s called Footalk and I record it with an old coworker and friend Richard Herrera. We first toyed with the idea over dinner last month thinking it would be kind of fun. So, after getting my act together and purchasing what was needed, our first episode is up!

We both consider this a trial run to see if we get enough interest and downloads from the public and our adorning fans. So far, the little feed that we have gotten has been positive. Richard and I share one main thing in common: we’re web designers. We have a love for web standards and enjoy technology in general. The topics we covered in the first episode range from what the podcast is about, web design, conferences we want to or will attend, and a website pick to show you.

There’s plenty of ideas for us to cover and we don’t know where the podcast will go but if there’s enough interest and downloads, we’ll keep it going! So, if you’re bored for and have about 25 minutes you can waste, please download and support our brand new Podcast, Footalk.
