Mensa Test

I’m just a tad slow to recall things sometimes, so I took my time trying to take this test. I mean a few hours of guessing. When I stopped, my score was at 20.

Try it yourself! And no cheating!

new phone

Dear Friends,

Please call me soon. I have a new phone and must enter your digits into it. I will go into detail about my plan after January 28 when my new plan kicks in, but let’s just say I got almost exactly what I wanted…

Sincerely,
Micah

light through the haze

I am horrible for not updating my personal website more often. I’m sure that there’s almost no one coming here regularly anymore to read my stuff, but I know I have mostly a few family and friends that occasionally do. I wish I could spend more time developing this site but for the moment, I just can’t. There are so many cool ideas I have to do with this site but having a full-time job has cut into most of my free time. I’m sure that’ll change once I finish a couple of freelance projects on the side but for right now this is the way it is! There is light through the haze, I just have to push my way through today in order to get to tomorrow.

Million Little Pieces

About 7 months ago, I was turned on to a little book called Million Little Pieces. I didn’t know what it was about except for one insanely high recommendation. So, totally based on this passionate plea, I decided to put it on my list of books to read.

Coincidentally just a couple of months later in September, Oprah decided that she was so addicted to this book that the author James Frey became her guest and this became one of the most popular books she’s ever put on her list.

So about a month later I found a cheap enough copy and for the rest of the year, I spent my bus rides to and from work reading a few pages at a time. So it took me literally 3 months to read it. If I was intent on reading it, I’m sure i could have finished it in one long sitting (it does have 430 pages!!).

What an unbelievable book.
Literally, unimaginably real and compelling.

For those who haven’t read it, I won’t spoil what it says but if you want to have a crazy experience, this book is definitely for you. Even if it was a complete work of fiction, there are still so many interesting and grasping things about this book that I could still recommend it as a great read.

Of the many issues it touched upon, the one I would like to focus on is the personality of the book and of James himself. This was most an autobiography, a work of non-fiction, however The Smoking Gun has a huge 6-page article debunking a lot of the extremities of what was written. I’m not sure that I believe James could have recounted every little, personal detail of what happened to him during that time, especially since it was written between 9-13 years after it took place. There are a lot of concepts and situations which are almost completely unbelievable but ones which James publicly swears by.

So, let’s take this out of the equation. The facts might be a little skewed or dramatized, but that’s not what matters.

James has a personality that only a few people I’ve ever met can truly, uniquely identify with. Most of us don’t understand the extreme nature of his logic, or how he can be so strong when most would be so weak. It’s not to say that he never fell, for as he explained throughout the book, his choices were a direct cause for his condition and he knew what he was doing with every choice. His decisions and actions were almost always based on a completely logical thinking, rationalizations which kept him in a life of drugs and alcohol as well as helping him throughout his recovery.

What really intrigued me about everything I read was how accurately his thoughts were written down. So often people try to express how they feel but with such failure. How do you properly express feelings and thoughts? His combination of simple dialogue and repetitive use of certain phrases and statements were a completely effective display of this emotion and thoughts. I can’t say that I identify with his drug use or alcoholism, but I know that the feelings he had for certain things, for certain people, for his parents, for those he liked, for those he hated, for the one he truly loved… all of these emotions seemed real. I could identify with the intensity.

It’s likely that the details of his story aren’t completely accurate, however I believe his recreation of everything else internal must have been easy. The feelings you have and build for people and things always stay with you. You never forget those things throughout your life and can always recall how you felt at a certain time or for certain people, and it was for this reason that I enjoyed this book so much.

Since this books initial publishment, there has been another book called My Friend Leonard and now a movie is set to be released late this year. The book is very graphic, contains a bunch of coarse language but truly is an amazing story.

limited cellular service

So my cell phone has almost finally taken its last breath. My phone charger is dead, and hopefully i have a duplicate at home otherwise this phone is useless. And I won’t be able to get to it until this weekend so if you try to call me and can’t get through, this is the reason.

I am working on/with Sprint to get a new package deal but am trying not to lose certain features and gain access to others. Getting exactly what you want is not an easy task unless you know the right people or talk to the right reps. Sprint has been notorious for giving out insane plans to customers and that’s why I won’t switch to other providers.

Here’s what I’m shooting for:

$30/month
500 anytime minutes
unlimited weekend/nights at 8pm
unlimited mobile to mobile
unlimted email and IM – AOL;MSN
unlimited Picture Mail
Unlimted web access
free nationwide long distance
First Incoming Minute Free
50-100 Text Messages

This would basically be paradise for me right now. But unfortunately, I don’t think I’ll get the 8pm (although I can get 7pm for an extra $5) and no text messages or FIMF either. Everything else is included in this one plan that I know about. I’m crossing my fingers that something awesome will work out!

my reflection of the year

How can it already be 2006 in just hours from now?

I drove up to Monterey yesterday to spend new year’s eve with some friends and had plenty of time to think about everything. I’ve really had an eventful year, one of the biggest of my life.

It started off by going to Germany in January/February. It was only 6 days with 2 of traveling, but this was the beginning. I am so very ready for another international trip.

I then spent a few months doing little of anything and I started a part-time web design job. In the meantime I picked up a couple of freelance web jobs and those have kept my plate full ever since.

In May, I went to Texas for over a month. It was a very welcome change of pace and I miss having the opportunity to spend lots of time in Texas, but hopefully I’ll get back sooner than later.

Before I left for Texas, I went on a job interview. After my trip, I went on a second interview where I was offered a new job. A new, full-time job. A new, full-time web design job. So after a week of contemplating, I decided to take it. So in celebration of this new job, I went to Monterey and San Francisco in July only to…

…get my car towed. They took my car from me because I had no car inspection sticker from Texas. So that forced me to register in California finally. That makes me a true California resident. San Francisco was a blast! It was nice to see a friend from Texas as well as my friends from Monterey.

Shortly after leaving San Francisco, I started my new job located in Santa Monica. This is quite a drive from my house, so a month later I started renting out a second place much closer so I could take the bus during the weekdays.

The only other memorable trip I took before Thanksgiving was to San Diego overnight on a whim. What a blast!

Thanksgiving was spent in San Angelo for a week and Christmas was spent in Colorado for a week. Both were spent with family and both were very enjoyable.

Overall, looking back at everything that’s happened, I’m amazed at how much traveling I did. International, domestic, and local. And, even though I have a full-time job this year, I hope that somehow in the next year I’m able to do just as much traveling, but to more international destinations. I am floating around the idea of going to London, Paris, and/or Italy. I am expecting to take at least one trip to Texas and one trip to New York City! Probably another trip to Monterey too. And hopefully another San Francisco trip. Now that I have a friend in Seattle, I’d like to do that city as well because it’s completely foreign to me.

My goals for the new year include paying off as much debt as possible, finding new opportunities for myself personally, and taking some financial risks to supplement my income. I also hope to get back into the music scene either behind the scenes or as a performer. And I need to go to the gym and I need to get any medical things out of the way.

This year was suprisingly eventful, but I expect next year to be the best year of my life. Many more changes are coming, hopefully in a timely manner too.

Now, I’m off to the Monterey Aquarium followed by an evening of nice champagne and celebration for this new year. Enjoy the New Year and make the best of everything in life!

And don’t forget to smile!

France does file sharing right!

Okay United States government, get the picture. It’s time to move to current times. Let’s make something like what France is doing work here.

The French government has voted on a draft legislation to legalize file-sharing (of files like music, movies, software, etc.). I would GLADLY pay $8.50/month to legalize what most kids my age already do illegally. I hope this passes into law and soon. Show the world what this kind of legislation can do to an industry.

chewbacca christmas

I’m so easily amused.
